My thoughts on head hacking anywhere are:….

First off. I taught Anthony Jacquin and Kevin Sheldrake impromptu techniques on my stage hypnosis masterclass in 2004. They have taken it way beyond anything I have ever done with it and have found a market for it. I would like to think I somehow played a small part in getting them going, although Ant was already a very good and successful hypnotherapist. But I have to admit I’m totally jealous of their Youth – compared to me – their energy and their following. I think they should be banned and possibly imprisoned! Or at the very least hung drawn and quartered. How dare they have a whale of time being well known and successful!

The ‘Problem’ with street hypnosis seems to ME to be this… Except for my friend in New Zealand Reg Blackwood and the head hacking team themselves, the exponents of the Street form don’t appear to make money from it, even at a busking level. And lets face it the odd free drink or cucumber may be refreshing or bowel cleansing but you can’t buy your Broadband with it. So the point seems to be to entertain the performer more than a paying audience, but then that can be said of most people who do magic as well as over 80% of people buying tricks today will never use them outside of a small group of friends or colleagues. And what seems to upset many established stage pros is that street hypnosis is way more popular than full blown stage hypnosis at the moment.

The difference between Stage and Street for me is that whilst one can be passably executed with a knowledge of simple technique, the other can Only be presented with just a simple basic knowledge of technique. I can think of several professional stage performers who’s shows are not very good in theatrical terms. However unlike singers, dancers or actors not being very good doesn’t show that much as we are still a very small bunch and for everyone who has seen a full stage show there are a dozen who have not. Although the InterWeb is certainly putting a few heads on blocks. I’m planning on putting my full show up there, gulp!

Most stage ‘shows’ are just a collection of routines with no shape or finesse. Few of them are actually ‘shows’ but nothing more than Street done on stage. Most ‘Comedy’ hypnotists are not themselves funny – for the record I’ve never used that term – with the exception of perhaps Ken Webster that certainly covers most UK players. So perhaps the problem with Street Hypnosis as far as the stage performers are concerned is that it shows how anyone can hypnotise and when the amazing ‘skill’ is shown to be a shallow disguise of simple psychological procedures, then presentation skills and showmanship is up for scrutiny.

Stage hypnosis took a knock along with all forms of stage entertainment in the 90′s in the UK. No, not because there were more people doing shows as some people think, it was the fall of the Miners Welfare clubs and working mens clubs which taught people to go to live shows from being children, right up to the simple fact that it was shown on TV and people then only wanted to see the bloke on the Tele.

Then as the century turned we entered the age of ‘Show Me’ where with the internet and the Karaoke mindset more people want to do rather than watch. In 1999 when we started teaching there were 13 schools of hypnosis, at last count there are 162 and 10 of those are ‘stage’.

The truth is I didn’t like the street approach at first. Not sure I do now. For my old head they looked as if they should be taking a box of tissues with them and in the early videos came across as a group of giggling schoolboys playing pranks and copping a quick feel from drunk birds in pubs. Some still do. But to be honest and when I Really look at it, there is little difference between that and me making peoples arms go stiff without bothering to hypnotise in recognisable fashion – certainly not using a trance state, or removing someones phobia at a party with my ‘Hypnotic Powers!’ when there is no chance of that becoming a booking.

Then, I am doing it for Me.

I am after all, above all else, a SHOW OFF, and that is what street hypnosis is all about. It’s about showing off. Pure egotism. Having a laff at the expense of others which, to be frank is what hypnosis relies on, the fact that people laugh AT other people in embarrassing situations. People doing ridiculous things, that’s right, being ridiculed.

So for me the difference is this. Street Hypnosis is about mind manipulation techniques entertaining the protagonists and little else. Stage Hypnosis is, or should be, about the art of making those techniques a Show and entertaining a fee paying audience.

“The Pareto principle (also known as the 80-20 rule,[1] the law of the vital few, and the principle of factor sparsity) states that, for many events, roughly 80% of the effects come from 20% of the causes” Wikipeadia

I think we can safety apply this to hypnosis. In my not too shabby experience it has been my observation that around 1 in 5 people are what I was taught by my Mentor to call ‘A Somnambulist’. In hypnotic terms this means someone who is very easy to hypnotise. It is my opinion that these are the only people who can ‘do’ hypnosis to the point useful on stage.

The somnambulist is always in a state of suggestion acceptance. That doesn’t mean they are ‘gullible’ as the two are not entirely the same. Many more people can be conned to accept snake oil but they figure it out after the event. A somnambulist won’t even notice the hypnotic suggestion and have no defence against it when executed concisely.

This of course also means that 20% of people can no more be hypnotised than you could survive on a diet of cardboard. However not to worry because if you are doing it right, [ in my book ] and only hypnotising people who actively seek it out and volunteer, then you will never meet this 1 of five people because they are totally uninterested in hypnosis.

The other 60% fall somewhere from being fairly easy to get into hypnosis but unlikely to have particularly active creativity, right through to those who could take so long it isn’t a viable thing to put effort into unless of course you are doing something therapeutic which is outside the bounds of this Stage and Entertainment hypnosis forum.

Now for the newbie this should help you to realise that the 100% target isn’t doable unless you allow the somnambulist to come to you rather than you going to them. Then you’re success rate is likely to go right up to maybe 70% or 80%.

The trick in recognising a somnambulist is of course simple in stage terms. Stick the word hypnotist on a poster. In magician terms just mention the word ‘Hypnosis’ or ‘Hypnotist’ and then look for the person who is most interested and ask if they have ever been hypnotised. Then leave it, if they want it they will ask for it. You can of course push the situation but the more you push the more your success rate will fall.

Derren Brown often starts a live routine by claiming no one will be hypnotised and you can almost feel the somnambulists going under at the very mention of the word. Then it’s a simple matter of watching for the most energetic and determined physical response to throwing out a Frisbee or a stuffed toy to pick the most likely to go under. However in Derren’s audience I’d guess that the Perato rule is probably reversed and his average audience is very heavy with somnambulists as the non responsive 20% wont even be there which of course pushes the odds up somewhat.

One of the most worrying things I read from newbies and hypnosis students is their failure rate compared to old fogies like me. This has nothing whatever to do with our ‘superior technique’ or confidence, it’s all down to choosing the right subject in the easiest way and then it’s down to the good old Perato rule.

Hope this helps someone.

There’s a video been put up on a forum I’m a member of, with a ‘warning’ about ‘adult’ language. I think language is vital for hypnotists and hypnotherapists to understand and so am fascinated by what makes a word “Adult”.

It cant be what the word means. For a child of 5 explaining what the word President means would be just as daunting as finding an understanding for f***.

It can not be whether the word is difficult for a child to say. All of the ‘adult’ words are one or at most two syllables unless hyphenated and even then on of the longest Mother-****** is very easy even for a three year old.

So it must be legislation, you know like driving a car, getting married or buying booze, there must be a legal age limit before you can say c***?

No, well not in any civilised country there isn’t, and even if there were just as the age of sexual consent in the UK is regularly ignored to the point of us having Europe’s largest percentage of ‘under age’ parents, such legislation would be totally ignored anyway.

So, what is ‘adult’ language. Why are some words more adult than others?

My all new 1 day

Rapid Hypnosis Intervention Workshop

is now the perfect extension from the 1 day

Introduction to Original Hypnosis

More details from http://JonathanChase.com

Run over a single Day the Workshop is fully Certified as a hypnotherapy approach by the Academy of Hypnotic Arts ltd.

Originally developed as part of Chinosis my HypnoSymbolism method is a refinement of the imposed and metaphorical systems that have been taught for years by most schools of hypnosis. I originally called it Neuro Hypnotic Symbolism, basically because it affects the Neurological system by hypnotically directing the subconscious in it’s own language.

Normal linguistics, talking to people, can be misinterpreted, misunderstood, or just not understood at all. They also lead to ideas and thoughts being imposed by the person conducting the session.

With my approach that simply doesn’t happen. In fact the person you work with is so internally focused that you can use this method without even knowing what is ‘wrong’ with them or what they want to achieve and still get a 95% hit rate!

It can even work outside of formal hypnosis, but then if you can hypnotise it just makes things easier to use it.

So in my workshop I’ll show you how to use My method. The ‘what to do next’ after the Original Hypnosis Introduction which although not mandatory to attend the Workshop it would ensure you not only know what to do but how to get there.

As a bonus for the workshop I’m also going to show you how to handle a ‘Group Hypnosis Session’ which allows you to charge less for a lot more people increasing your client base and reputation.

I’m looking forward to teaching you these methods and knowing that not only will they aid your own personal and professional development, but that your clients, friends and family will feel the Buzz and pass that on.

I look forward to seeing you soon.
